Barco was a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Covilhã, with an area of 14.07 ksqm and 473 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 33.6 inhabitants/ksqm.
It was extinguished in 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, having been added to the parish of Coutada, to form a new parish called União das Freguesias de Barco and Coutada, of which is the headquarters.
Bucolic village with a splendid landscape, which extends along the North bank of the River Zêzere, it was for many years the crossing point for people and goods, between the banks of the river, hence earning its name.
It also has fountains Roman ruins and other remains, such as those from the Moorish passage through Serra da Argemela. Serra da Argemela is rich in minerals and even before the arrival of the Romans it was explored in search of them. There are therefore countless mine caves and open pits on its slopes.
Shrouded in several legends there is one that gave it its name, about a Moor who wanted to marry a rich Moor. On the day of the wedding, the Moors took her to the top of the mountain, throwing her into a very deep well. Whenever there is wind, it is said that you can hear the moaning of the Moorish woman among the mines, caves and wells, and the expression in the air-groan-ela resulted in the name Argemela.
